So whats a shunt anyway?

Posted by cancer1o1 on February 23, 2009

And how did it get so powerful?

2 weeks ago on wednesday I remember an argument starting between Shannon and I.  She kept asking to take me to emergency.  and I couldnt figure out why.   She would read from the side efffects paper from the Avastan treatment I was on and once again be convinced that she was doing the right thing.  I didint get it.  I dont remember anything else that night, but I do remember wanting crispy pizza.

Apparently she called 911 and the pararmedics came to get me.  I guess I had them talked out of it until Shannon asked them to sign a letter of liability.  They took me in.  The story is pretty funny but I dont remember it.

My next memory is throwing up.  I guess they just finished explaining what a shunt is, and I gave them my reaction.

The next day I woke up in ICU.  The door was closed but the room was pretty dark.  It was about 5 am and I started looking around trying to make sense of where I was.  I didint remember being in a hospital.  I remember my head hurt so I reached up and put my hand in a gooy mess, disgusting I thought.  My first thought was that I was put in a room to die.  That seemeed to sad to be real so I kept searching.  not long from then a nurse came in and helped me get oriented.

Bucket List

Posted by cancer1o1 on February 6, 2009

Shannon and I have talked alot about the things we could do or the places we could go and the truth is.  I dont have the energy to do alot of things and I certainly dont want to go spending money we dont have so that I can go out in style and leave a mess behind.

You know what I want in my bucket?

Laughter.

I never watched two and a half men, and now its one of my favorites.  It doesnt seem to take money or energy to laugh and it sure feels good

Posted by cancer1o1 on February 6, 2009

John Hopkins – surgeon feels confident that maybe he can help

City of Hope – would like to get us a zecond opinion

Kaiser – wants to step up my Avastan to include chemo,  supposed to tell him for tomorrow for fridays treatment

On another note:  I started reaching out to people who have the abiltity to get my wife, family and I out there doing things.  Im starting to fee the end of things and I dont like it too much.  Maybe its to a ball game, a night of bowling, a day of fishing, a day at the races.  One of my biggest inabilities is to let others help me.

This is something I would truly like.  I promise not to be so sick if you can just help us

Chapter 6: Quitting Chemo

Posted by cancer1o1 on January 31, 2009

Its strange for me to go backwards to tell this story but its kind of my personality to fiish things.

So once we decided to quit chemo we waited until our next apt with the doctors to discuss it with them.  First we met with Emily, I always thought her to be assistant to Dr. Green, true or not, I dont know.  Anyway we asked her about quitting and she was clearly against it, saying that once you quit the chemo you cant go back on it.

Dr. Green came in and we asked the same questions, do we know for sure if the chemo is working or not,  if we quit, what would be our alternatives if it started growing again?  He told us that honestly he didint know if the chemo was doing any good or not,  that if I did quit and the tumor started growing again, I could always dump alot of chemo on it, or switch to another.

So we decided to quit the chemo, I think that was october.  The MRI showed the tumor as almost gone.  The next MRI was November and that was the MRI showing 2 tumors, but unclear and inconclusive, so we scheduled another MRI for December.  We were very anxious to see the next MRI and we couldnt help but feel that maybe we had screwed up quitting the chemo in the first place, but we had to keep in mind that my quality of life had improved many times over in the last couple of months.

Decembers MRI showed the original tumor had grown back and it was larger than it was originally.  With it also came the pain that I talked about earlier.  Given this news, I still wasnt ready to go back on chemo, I cant tell you how horrible chemo is, I would almost do anything else.  In fact, we chose another treatment called Avastan.  Avastan can be taken by itself or with chemo and we chose without.  Dr. Green says that we should know in 5 or 6 weeks whether the treatment is working or not.

Chapter 5 – Home Again

Posted by cancer1o1 on January 31, 2009

Coming home again from rehap was a little scary and I looked forward to it at the same time.  When you are in rehab you find out what you cant do, what abilities you have lost.  Stairs, dogs, throw-rugs, etc., they were all variables that made me nervous.

Coming home though was fantaastic.  Being surrounded by the people you love makes everything clearer.  One step at a time, you can overcome the rugs, dogs, etc.

Staying on the chemo for the next 9 months was the hardest part.  Much of which I dont even remember and I know that I was sick most of the time.  My short term memory was a mess, forgetting days, conversations, events.  We went on 4 motorhome trips and I still only remember 2.

I was in bed for 2 or 3 weeks out of the month.  Many trips to the hospital, IV’s phenegran shots, etc.  After about 9 months, we started talking to each other about quitting chemo, quality of life.

You guys are helping me

Posted by cancer1o1 on January 31, 2009

Everyones comments are so helpful.  As I read the experiences of others their ups and downs, it just seems to help when you know that you are not alone.  I so appreciate them and ask that you would keep them coming.  Tomorrow is superbowl sunday and Jerry (my stepfather) will have passed away 1 year.

Special thanks to Glen and Dave for showing up at my house yesterday with an electric wheelchair and they even built a ramp out the back door to get outside.  What a great surprise!

Friday I started the new treatment, and today…

Posted by cancer1o1 on January 27, 2009

I can barely walk.  Why I dont know, but my legs have lost their strength overnight.  The treatment? The pain meds? The cancer?  I do have a call in to the doctor, but as you can imagine he doesnt necessarily jump at any of my symptoms.

I once again turned my life, my will, and my family over to the care of God.

Avastan? The new treatment

Posted by cancer1o1 on January 27, 2009

The last MRI showed the tumor growing very fast. Maybe the chemo had been holding it back, maybe not. The numbness now goes up my leg into my ribs. The pain went back up to a 10 again and they killed it with a morphine/steroid cocktail. As of today, no pain, but very weak. Walking is a tough one.
Friday we started Avastan. The first treatment is 1 1/2 hour IV, then an hour, and then half an hour each. Although they gave me a few pages on possible side effects, I decided not to read them and just see what I experience for myself.

INFORMATION ON THE ISSELS TREATMENT CENTER

The Issels Treatment is a comprehensive immunotherapy that has achieved complete long-term remission of a great variety of advanced cancers which had failed conventional therapies. The treatment strategy places equal importance on the removal of the cancerous tumor as on the elimination of causes and preconditions that have contributed to the development of the tumor.

Many examples of documented long-term remissions can be reviewed on the internet website www.issels.com under Cases. These cases are not representative of all of the types of cancer successfully treated, but are meant to demonstrate the regenerative power of the body even in advanced stages of the disease.

The core treatments in detail can be found on www.issels.com under Treatment Summary and pictures of the hospital can be seen under Clinics. Patient Testimonials may answer many of the questions usually asked. Statistical studies and publications by Josef M. Issels, M.D. and other authors provide more scientific information and can be viewed on www.issels.com under Publications and Statistics.

The hospital is a full-service hospital specializing in alternative/complementary and conventional cancer care for 45 years. It meets all US standards. Patients come from all parts of the world and about 80% are from the US. All physicians are fluent in English and Spanish, as are most of the nurses and other staff members. Interpreters are available upon request.

In addition to all specialty medical services, the hospital offers many activities that are conducive for healing and very much appreciated by the patients and their companions. Patients and their companions are encouraged to get together in the community rooms for educational lectures, videos, art therapy, games, etc. Outdoor activities such as strolls by the nearby ocean are recommended. A special area is designated for meditation and prayers, if so desired.

The hospital is located two blocks from the Pacific Ocean, in Playas de Tijuana, Mexico, just across the border from San Diego, California. The hospital driver welcomes arriving patients at the baggage claim area of the San Diego International airport and escorts them in a 40-minute ride to the hospital at no additional charge. Patients from overseas who do not have a US visa, can apply for a Mexican visa and fly via Mexico City to Tijuana.

THERAPIES AND HOSPITAL STAY

Patients come for an intensive 4-week in-patient treatment costs USD 24,500. Payment is due in the form of a cashier’s check or wire transfer upon admission. For qualified patients shorter programs may apply. Refunds are granted for services that are not rendered.

The above price includes one companion free of charge in the same large room, the diet (organic food) antioxidants, nutraceuticals, enzymes, glandular extracts, tissue salts, autohemotherapy, blood oxygenation, photoluminescence therapy, and all the medications and treatments that will be listed in the treatment protocol.

VACCINE PROGRAM

The vaccine program is comprised of the extracorporeal photopheresis with the Autologous Dendritic Cell Vaccine, Autologous Issels Vaccine, and the immune boosting Coley’s Vaccine, including home supply for several months. This treatment amounts to an additional USD 16,500. All of these components enhance one another. The treatment protocols are personalized according to the individual patient’s condition.

Additional costs of USD 2,000 to 3,000 may apply for medications of the home care program for 3 months. The attending physician will recommend these medications according to the patient’s requirements.

The medical team of the Issels Treatment Center was trained by Dr. Issels himself. These conscientious and dedicated physicians have many years of experience in conventional and complementary cancer therapy and take care of our seriously ill patients in an exceptional way. They collaborate with experts of all specialty medical fields depending on the individual patient’s needs.

When patients go home, the attending physician provides the patients with all of the instructions for the home care program and is available every weekday for telephone consultations when patients call with questions. He/she will work closely with the patient’s home doctor.

Patients who would like to proceed are encouraged to fax recent reports of the pathology, of the latest CT scan, bone scan, MRI, PET scan, surgical summary and laboratory examinations, along with the attached patient questionnaire duly filled out,  to the fax number USA 1-623-670-5992, Attn. Issels Department. Upon evaluation of the records the medical team will propose an individualized treatment program, if they feel that they can help.

RATIONALE OF THE ISSELS TREATMENT STRATEGY

The rationale of the comprehensive Issels Treatment strategy applies to all types and stages of cancer.

In cancer patients the body’s regulatory, repair and defense mechanisms fail to prevent formation of a cancerous tumor. This failure is called by some researchers a “regulatory freeze” or “tolerance,” which is due to a combination of causal factors that vary from one individual patient to the other. In each cancer patient, however, this “regulatory freeze” has led to an internal terrain, a “soil” that promotes the development and multiplication of cancer cells.

The comprehensive immunotherapy is designed to break through this “regulatory freeze”. It is a unique blend of treatment modalities that complement and enhance each other in an effort to restore the body’s regulatory, repair and defense systems, of which the immune system is one important part. In general terms, some of these treatments work on the levels of biochemical defense and help cancer cells to undergo differentiation; as encoded in the genes that cause them to die through programmed cell death (called apoptosis). Other treatment modalities contribute to tumor remissions through working mechanisms on the levels of cell-mediated and humoral immunities.

COMPONENTS OF THE COMPREHENSIVE IMMUNOTHERAPY PROGRAM

The Treatment consists of the following components:

* Nutritional immunotherapy, blood oxygenation, glandulars, botanicals, enzyme therapy, intravenous therapies, diet, and colonics all aid cellular metabolism and tissue and organ function and repair.

* Issels’ Autologous Vaccine and biologicals work in a very complex way to enhance the immune functions. They are prepared from the patient’s own blood, which represent his/her own unique internal bodily environment. The preparation follows procedures that favor the development of antigenic peptides and other immunogenic compounds in the fight against cancer and other immune disorders.

* Coley’s Mixed Bacterial Vaccine opens blockades in the body matrix (all solid, semi-solid and fluid connective tissues), stimulates the production of the body’s own interferons, interleukins, colony stimulating factors, tumor necrosis factor and other potent disease fighters.

* Extracorporeal Photopheresis (FDA-approved for cutaneous T-cell lymphoma due to research by Richard L. Edelson, Yale University) with the Dendritic Cell Vaccine works in the following way:

Via the Photopheresis device, pathogens and abnormal cells are destroyed through exposure to ultraviolet light, which also has an enormous immune-boosting effect. During this procedure, monocytes are separated from the blood then cultured to maturity; converting them to active Dendritic cells. These are injected into the patient in small customized doses over several months.

Dendritic cells are responsible for identifying pathogens (viruses, fungi, bacteria) and malignant cells, by presenting their identifying markers (antigens) to specific T lymphocytes, which then multiply and attack only the identified diseased cells, not normal healthy cells.

The Issels Treatment Center offers a comprehensive, nontoxic strategy for all types and stages of cancer, which is customized to the individual needs of each patient.
